about CANHR
California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) was organized
in 1983 to improve the quality of care for Californias nursing
home and residential care residents, provide residents and their
families with support, information and referral services, and
promote alternatives to institutionalization. Since 1990, CANHR
has been the only statewide consumer organization that offers
one-stop pre-placement, legal and financial counseling
services to long term care consumers in California. Through its
statewide, toll-free 800#, CANHR responds to thousands of consumer
inquiries each year with advice, information, intervention or
referrals on a variety of long term care concerns.
CANHRs services include pre-placement counseling; a consumer
information system that includes up to date quality of care information
on every nursing home in California; a State Bar-certified Lawyer
Referral Service that provides consumers with legal referrals
to qualified elder law and elder abuse attorneys on a free, low
fee or regular fee basis; consumer and provider outreach and education
on various long term care issues; legal services support to qualified
legal services projects in California; and a Pension Rights Counseling
Project that provides California consumers with assistance, information,
intervention or referrals. For more information about CANHR and

about CANHRs Nursing Home Guide
California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) initiated
its statewide nursing home consumer information system in 1985.
In an effort to provide consumers with sufficient information
in order to make informed choices about nursing home placement,
CANHR has maintained detailed profiles on every nursing home in
California since that time. As the first computerized nursing
home information system in the country, CANHR has won numerous
state, local and national awards for its advocacy work and its
services to Californias nursing home consumers.
